Heart of Darkness borrows motifs from Africa, India and Indonesia (from Paminggir and Nggada peoples) . There are animals run over by machines, a severed hand and Dutch lions holding up a television set in place of a crown. Despite the pretence of contemporary culture to be otherwise it remains animist but with a technological fetishism.
