Heart
of Darkness
Ikat 230 X 95cm 1995
handwoven cotton ikat, beads, string, cowrie shells, natural dyes. Edition of 2
Weavers: Umbu Augustinus Tonga Retang, Rambu Monika Uru Emu.,

Heart of Darkness borrows
motifs from Africa, India and Indonesia (from Paminggir and Nggada peoples) . There are
animals run over by machines, a severed hand and Dutch lions holding up a television set
in place of a crown. Despite the pretence of contemporary culture to be otherwise it
remains animist but with a technological fetishism.
