| The Gurirr Gurirr Ceremony is a significant example of evolving Aboriginal culture. This ceremony is a song cycle in which masked, painted dancers hold painted boards, like moving pictures, to depict the narrative. This ceremony came to Rover Thomas in 1974 after the death of his skin mother in a road accident in the wake of the flooding following Cyclone Tracy. Part of this dance cycle involves a Dewari (devil) that guides the spirit of the dead woman as she travels. In this painting the Dewari guides us (the dead?) on the midday show. The travel is in style by red limo. |
